Pernod Ricard Pacific

Pernod Ricard Pacific, the regional entity of Pernod Ricard in the pacific region, is a leading wine and spirits company employing over 2,000 people and generating a turnover of approximately AU$1.2 billion.

Influenced by a strong Australian and New Zealand wine heritage, Pernod Ricard Pacific has a dual role: regional wine brand management and pacific region distribution of the Group’s entire wine and spirits portfolio.

Problem/Customer Requirement

In 2000, the then Orlando Wyndham wine company was sourcing its wine cask valve and flange components from overseas.

Of concern, were the many supply chain risks associated with importation of products for further manufacture. Additionally, the need for consistently high quality was critical.

Two principal factors which saw Pernod Ricard investigate the possible Australian production of these plastic cask components.

In assessing the options available, the company specified that any supplier must:

  • Have the ability to fully understand the technical nature of the cask parts.
  • Be capable of manufacture to rigid schedules.
  • Maintain strict quality controls.
  • Deliver, on time every time, against forecast needs.

Demonstrating its ability to meet all such requirements, and after factory visits by senior Pernod Ricard management, Techno Plas was awarded the wine cask component contract.

“ The relationship between Pernod Ricard and Techno Plas is a strong and open one, although, these days we have very few reasons to actually meet up. The business runs like clock work. We supply the forecasts and then they manage supply, simply and effectively.”

Action Taken/Solution Steps - by Techno Plas

  • Techno Plas managed the tool design and build on behalf of Pernod Ricard.
  • Techno Plas worked with Australian polymer suppliers, on extensive material development and trialling, to ensure materials used would not result in wine tainting.
  • Raw material development was carried out with trial parts produced and supplied to Pernod Ricard for evaluation and approval.
  • Since the beginning of the relationship Techno Plas have overseen the build of a second lot of injection mould tooling to ensure that product supply is guaranteed even in the event of major tool failure.

Result/Outcome for Customer

  • Techno Plas commenced manufacturing for Pernod Ricard in 2000 and since then millions of units have been produced for the Group each year. Delivery is to schedule with no supply chain risk.
  • Pernod Ricard has been able to fully outsource the manufacture of a product which is non core to wine making and marketing.
